Finding the right Therapist for you

Finding a therapist that works for you can be both overwhelming and exhilarating. That’s why it’s easy to feel helpless on your quest for the perfect therapist that fits your needs.

Everyone wants to find the right therapist for them; someone who understands what you want, listens to you, and offers you the right advice, while still being easy to talk to. And while it may seem easy for some, It's not uncommon for people to feel helpless and give up on finding one after even one try.

The journey may feel endless and tiring, and you may just want to give up altogether. You may feel perplexed, confused, and agitated. You may feel as though you have to settle on the first one you find and call it a night… but that's not true!

We know how difficult that process of finding the right therapist for you can be, so we’ve put together a list of a few tips that may help you find your way.

Ask yourself, why am I looking for therapy?

Though you may not have just one reason, or you feel as though you just want to give it a shot, understand that there are different types of therapists with different specialties. Ask yourself what you’re looking for in therapy, and look for someone specializing in that field… you can always ask for a referral!

Ask your family and friends for referrals

Have some friends or family members who are also in therapy? That's great, ask them how they feel about their own therapist, and why they enjoy their company, strategies, and sessions so much. Asking them if they would recommend their therapist or practice can help speed up the process!

Consider demographics you find important

Are you more comfortable opening up to a man or woman? Do you have a preference on their age? Be mindful of any genders, races, religions, sexuality, ethnicities etc., you are and aren’t looking for in a therapist. Therapy sessions can feel very vulnerable, so you want to ensure you feel comfortable. Until you know what you’re looking for, you may never feel completely satisfied with your choice.

Call ahead and ask them questions

Most therapists are comfortable with a brief (15 minute long) phone call to let the clients decide whether or not it's worth coming in for a full session. Take this time to ask your therapist questions about their approaches. While some have a more humorous approach, others can be more serious, holistic, or conservative. Not feeling like giving them a call? Check online to see if their practice has a quick profile of them.

Trust your gut, and understand that it’s okay to keep searching

If you don’t feel as though your needs are being fulfilled by your therapist, then try out a new one! If you didn’t feel comfortable during your session, you don’t like the way your therapist approaches certain topics, or you feel as though you’re looking for a different style, don’t be ashamed to let them know. Finding the right therapist can take time and effort, but it will all be worth it if you can feel comfortable, vulnerable, and safe.
