How to check in with a friend who has anxiety

Do you have a friend who struggles with anxiety? Here are some tips to help!

  • Check up on your friend. Text/Email/Call

  • If you know their love language, show them you love them with that particular language.

  • It is important to check in but not to be overwhelming. Let your friend know there’s not a need to respond if they don’t want to. No pressure. Sometimes texting a lot or being in constant communication can be overwhelming for those who struggle with anxiety.

  • As friends, we need to be mindful of the words we choose as well as the time of day that we choose to text them.

  • Telling your friend to stop worrying DOES NOT work.

  • Let them know you are a safe place and can reach out whenever they need it.

  • Example: If my friend is worried about an upcoming event, whether it's a meeting or a difficult conversation, I will text them encouraging/positive quotes or ask them to come up with some positive statements they can say to themselves.
