Supporting someone coming out or who is thinking of coming out:

Coming out is not a one-time thing. It will happen many times in many different situations for those who are choosing to live as their most authentic selves. It takes a lot of courage to come out!

Here are some ways to support someone who is coming out in your life:

  • Reassure your friend/family member of your continued friendship and support!

  • Express feelings of pride, happiness, or excitement…  Ask your friend how you can best support them?

  • Remember that their gender/sexuality is just one dimension (of many) of them

  • Check-in to see how confidential this is? Do other people know? Is it a secret? Respect your friend’s/family members right to privacy.

  • Being curious is normal! Be sensitive when asking questions and make sure to keep checking in with them.

  • Educate yourself. The internet is filled with amazing resources to help answer all of your questions your friend may not be ready to answer
